Step into the largest Catholic church building in Taiyuan, the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Originally founded in 1635, this historic landmark serves as the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Taiyuan in Shanxi, China. Rebuilt after its predecessor was destroyed during the Boxer Rebellion, the current structure was completed in 1905 and recognized as a Major National Historical and Cultural Site.

Visiting this site allows you to admire a simplified Romanesque Revival architectural style built from brick and masonry, wrapped in a striking rusty red hue that honors historical believers. As you approach the west-facing facade, you will notice unique fusion details, including square pillars decorated with traditional Chinese-style capitals. Notice how the entrance design incorporates religious symbolism, featuring seven steps and seven-petalled arched windows.

Inside, the grand interior accommodates over 3,000 people and features a high nave ceiling supported by 20 square marble columns, double-layered arched windows, and side aisles lined with coupled Ionic pillars. At the rear, you can view three main altars featuring remarkably elaborate sculptures and carvings.
