Why Taiyuan
Taiyuan is the capital of Shanxi Province in China, serving as the province's political, economic, cultural, and international exchange center. Located roughly in the center of Shanxi, the city sits on the Fen River where the waterway exits mountain terrain to enter a flat basin. Its name translates to "great plain," reflecting this geographic landscape. Taiyuan is historically nicknamed the City of the Dragon, a title earned through its frequent designation as a primary or provisional capital for multiple Chinese dynasties over its long past.
The municipality spans nearly 7,000 square kilometers and encompasses six districts and three counties, housing over five million residents. Beyond its administrative role, the city developed into an industrial base centered on energy and heavy chemicals, supported by abundant local natural deposits such as coal, iron, marble, and quartz, alongside surrounding coniferous forests of pine, spruce, and cypress.
With an urban history stretching back over 2,500 years to 497 BC, the settlement originally known as Jinyang played a pivotal role in northern China's military, political, and economic affairs. It functioned as an imperial or secondary capital during various epochs, including the Tang dynasty when it was designated as a northern capital. Over time, it grew into a prominent commercial hub, hosting private trade markets during the Song dynasty and later playing a role in international trade and early Chinese banking during the Qing era.
Among the prominent historical attractions for visitors is the Jinci complex, home to the Temple of the Goddess. Reconstructed in 1102 after its original construction in 1023, it stands as the oldest existing building in Taiyuan. Additionally, the Longshan Grottoes offer notable examples of Taoist cave art constructed during the early Yuan dynasty.
Geographically, Taiyuan commands key north-south transit routes through Shanxi and provides mountain passage east and west through the Taihang Mountains. The local environment experiences a warm temperate continental monsoon climate. This weather pattern brings hot, humid summers, short and windy springs, and long, dry, cold winters.
