Why Lexington

Lexington, the seat of Fayette County in Kentucky's Bluegrass region, is widely recognized as the Horse Capital of the World. The city serves as the core of a broader metropolitan area and covers a diverse landscape balancing urban districts with expansive countryside. Its regional identity is defined by hundreds of horse farms and a long-standing equine heritage, reinforced by urban planning initiatives such as the nation's first urban growth boundary, created in 1958 to preserve the surrounding agricultural lands.

The area's history began in June 1775 when a group of frontiersmen led by William McConnell camped at the site of present-day McConnell Springs on the Middle Fork of Elkhorn Creek. Upon receiving news of the American Revolutionary War's initial skirmish in Lexington, Massachusetts, the pioneers named their settlement after that town. Chartered in 1782, the community grew rapidly in the early nineteenth century and became home to prominent figures such as statesman Henry Clay and merchant John Wesley Hunt. Lexington also holds significant cultural history, including the establishment of the First African Baptist Church around 1790, the oldest Black Baptist congregation in the state.

The city receives an average of 49.8 inches of precipitation annually, with late spring and summer being slightly wetter.
