Must-seeThe world’s largest Van Gogh collection, beautifully told — a highlight of any Amsterdam trip.

Situated along Museum Square in Amsterdam South, the Van Gogh Museum is a national cultural institution housing the most extensive collection of art by Vincent van Gogh in the world. Positioned near other prominent landmarks such as the Rijksmuseum, the Stedelijk Museum, and the Concertgebouw, the site presents a comprehensive overview of the master artist's work alongside creations by his contemporaries. Depending on the season, sunflowers are displayed outside the main entrance to welcome visitors.

Following Van Gogh's death in 1890, his unsold artistic estate was preserved by his brother Theo, and subsequently managed by Theo's widow, Johanna van Gogh-Bonger. Her efforts to organize exhibitions internationally helped elevate the painter's posthumous recognition. The family collection was later passed to her son, Vincent Willem van Gogh, and eventually entrusted to the state-backed Vincent van Gogh Foundation in 1962. Commissioned by the Dutch government, the dedicated museum opened to the public in June 1973.

The museum complex comprises two distinct structures connected by an underground passage. The primary four-story building, designed by Gerrit Rietveld and later renovated by Martien van Goor, features a rectangular layout housing the permanent collection, an introductory display, a café, a gift shop, and informative sections on painting restoration. Adjoining it is the three-story oval wing designed by Kisho Kurokawa, which specifically hosts major temporary exhibitions.

Inside, visitors can view 200 paintings, 400 drawings, and 700 personal letters tracing Van Gogh’s career through various geographic stages, including Nuenen, Antwerp, Paris, Arles, Saint-Rémy, and Auvers-sur-Oise. Highlights include iconic canvases such as The Potato Eaters, Sunflowers, Bedroom in Arles, Almond Blossoms, and Wheatfield with Crows, alongside nine self-portraits and early drawings. Displays also showcase 19th-century Impressionist and post-Impressionist sculptures and paintings by notable figures like Claude Monet, Paul Gauguin, Édouard Manet, and Auguste Rodin.

In addition to its physical venue in Amsterdam, the museum manages a technology-driven, travelling 3D audio-visual exhibition called the Meet Vincent Van Gogh Experience. Designed to present the story of the artist's life and work across international cities without transporting fragile original canvases, this interactive production complements the central museum's ongoing role as a primary center for 19th-century art history.
