Why Qingdao

Located on the Shandong Peninsula facing the Yellow Sea, Qingdao is a major sub-provincial city and vital seaport in China's Shandong province. Also known by names such as Island City and Jiaozhou Bay, it borders Yantai, Weifang, and Rizhao. The city overlooks Jiaozhou Bay, with the Jiaozhou Bay Bridge connecting its central urban zones to Huangdao district on the western shore. Qingdao administers seven urban districts—Shinan, Shibei, Huangdao, Laoshan, Licang, Chengyang, and Jimo—alongside three county-level cities: Jiaozhou, Pingdu, and Laixi. Its central built-up metro area accommodates over seven million residents, making it a prominent economic center with the highest GDP in the province.

Human activity in the region spans six millennia, originating with early Dongyi cultural traditions. By the Eastern Zhou dynasty, the town of Jimo had emerged as a key regional center. In the late Qing dynasty, the coastal settlement, then called Jiao'ao, was fortified in 1891 before being conceded to Germany in 1898 following the Juye Incident. Under German naval administration from 1898 to 1914, Qingdao transformed from a quiet fishing village into a planned port city. The period introduced modernized infrastructure, including wide paved streets, electricity, centralized sewage, clean water supplies, schools, rail connections, and the Germania Brewery, established in 1903, which laid the foundation for Tsingtao Brewery.

Control over the city shifted multiple times throughout the twentieth century. Japan occupied the territory during World War I in 1914, leading to diplomatic disputes that triggered the May Fourth Movement in China. Although Chinese administration resumed in 1922, Japan re-occupied the city from 1938 until the end of World War II. After a postwar period hosting the US Navy's Western Pacific Fleet, the city came under Chinese Communist control in June 1949. Since the implementation of national open-door policies in 1984, Qingdao has expanded rapidly into an advanced commercial, financial, and industrial hub while hosting the headquarters of China's northern naval fleet.

Today, Qingdao is recognized as a major resort destination, global port metropolis, and financial center, serving as a key node along the Belt and Road Initiative. The older business district and coastal areas feature historic German-style architecture, while newer central business and industrial sectors operate across Shibei, Licang, Chengyang, and the southern districts. The city is home to several higher education institutions, such as the Ocean University of China and Qingdao University. Ranked high for its scientific research output and livability, the city offers visitors a blend of historical streetscapes, coastal vistas, and modern urban development.
