Why San Luis Potosí

San Luis Potosí, the capital and most populous municipality of its namesake state in west-central Mexico, sits at an elevation of 1,864 meters within the Bajío macroregion. Positioned strategically midway between Mexico City and the United States border, it occupies a central location between Mexico's three largest urban hubs. Founded in 1592 following the discovery of silver and gold in nearby Cerro de San Pedro, the settlement was named after King Louis IX of France, with the addition of Potosí referencing the mineral riches of Potosí, Bolivia.

Prior to European settlement, the region was known as El Gran Tunal and inhabited by nomadic Chichimeca groups. Spanish colonization advanced after a peace agreement was negotiated in 1589, following a Franciscan mission established in 1583. San Luis Potosí developed into an important colonial center and later served as the temporary seat of the Mexican government in 1863 during the French invasion. In 1910, the city gained political significance when Francisco I. Madero authored the Plan of San Luis Potosí, calling for an armed uprising against the presidency and initiating the Mexican Revolution.

Today, the UNESCO-listed historic center features architecture along the former Camino Real de Tierra Adentro trade route. The central Plaza de Armas holds a historic cathedral and the 1770 Governor's Palace, while the nearby Templo de Nuestra Señora del Carmen, established in 1749, is noted for its ornate altars and colorful tiled domes. Cultural landmarks include the Plaza de Toros Fermin Rivera bullring and a railway museum located inside the former passenger train station. Higher education is anchored by the Autonomous University of San Luis Potosí, an institution stemming from a seventeenth-century Jesuit college.

Beyond the old quarter, Tangamanga I Park houses the Laberinto Museum of Science and Arts, which features endemic plant gardens and six interactive galleries. Modern skyline features include the EME and Muniz Werger high-rises. Local culinary tradition highlights orange-hued enchiladas potosinas served alongside refried beans and guacamole, often accompanied by Agua de Lourdes sparkling mineral water bottled in nearby Santa María del Río. The area experiences a cold semi-arid climate with consistent year-round temperatures and primary precipitation falling between May and October.

Travelers reach the city via Ponciano Arriaga International Airport, located 17 kilometers from the historic center, offering domestic connections and flights to select United States destinations. Road transport relies on Mexican Federal Highways 49, 57, 70, and 80. Regional buses use the Terminal Terrestre Potosina, while local transit includes an urban bus network and the Mi Red Metro bus rapid transit system.
