Why Da Nang

Da Nang is the fourth-largest city by population in Vietnam and the second-largest by land area, situated along the South Central Coast. Bisected by the Han River, the urban landscape sits between the South China Sea to the east and mountainous terrain to the west. Located south of Hue across the Hai Vân Pass, it acts as a primary transportation hub for the region, connected via National Route 1, the North–South Railway, an international airport, and a major commercial port.

The surrounding geography is dominated by the Annamite Range to the north and northwest, where mountain peaks reach heights between 700 and 1,500 meters, including the elevated highland area of Ba Na Hills. To the south and east, the terrain transitions into coastal plains lined with white sand beaches. Notable geographical features and administrative districts within the city's territory include the Marble Mountains, coastal areas such as Son Tra and Ngu Hanh Son, and the offshore special zone of Hoang Sa.

Human settlement in the region dates back to the establishment of the Champa kingdom in 192 AD, with historic sites like Indrapura, Singhapura, and My Son located in the surrounding territory. Western contact began in 1535 with the arrival of Portuguese navigator António de Faria. Historically known as Cua Han and later designated Tourane during French colonial rule from 1884 to 1945, the city grew into a major shipping center after an 1835 royal edict restricted foreign trade to its port. Historical landmarks include the brick-built Dien Hai Citadel, while its recent past includes serving as a prominent air transportation hub in the mid-20th century.

Visitors to Da Nang can explore its varied administrative sectors, ranging from the central capital ward of Hai Chau to surrounding coastal and highland communes. The local landscape offers access to historic fortifications, elevated mountain trails, and expansive coastal stretches. Regional transport routes, including historical rail and tram corridors that once linked the city to nearby Hoi An, facilitate travel across the urban center and its natural environs.

Da Nang features a tropical monsoon climate divided into a dry season from January to August and a wet, typhoon-prone season from September to December. The annual mean temperature is roughly 26 °C, with the warmest conditions occurring between June and August and cooler averages prevailing from December through February. The driest months fall between February and April, while rainfall peaks significantly between September and November. Monthly sunlight reaches its highest levels in May and June.
