Why Curitiba

Curitiba is the capital and largest city of Paraná state, located in Southern Brazil. Resting on a plateau in the Brazilian Highlands at an average altitude of over 900 meters above sea level, the city features a landscape of gently rolling hills partially surrounded by mountain ranges such as the Serra do Mar. Situated west of the coastal port of Paranaguá, it serves as an important cultural, political, and economic hub in Latin America and is home to the historic Federal University of Paraná.

First established by Portuguese settlers in the late 17th century, the municipality originally served as a modest agricultural settlement and an intermediate trading post for cattle drivers. During the 19th and 20th centuries, economic development accelerated through logging, agricultural expansion, and the yerba mate trade. Waves of European immigrants, particularly German, Italian, Polish, and Ukrainian settlers, helped shape the city's diverse heritage. In the mid-20th century, forward-thinking municipal planning transformed the city by introducing pedestrianized central districts, expansive park systems, and an integrated Bus Rapid Transit network.

Visitors to Curitiba can explore a variety of historic and cultural attractions. Preserved grand mansions belonging to former yerba mate industrialists are located in the districts of Batel and Alto da Glória, while the historic district highlights the city's early architectural roots. Cultural landmarks include the Memorial of Polish Immigration, which features seven traditional wooden log cabins that display historical artifacts and regional mementos. Additionally, the municipal environmental department manages a botanical garden and several large greenhouses that cultivate native plants and seasonal flowers.

The city's terrain is crossed by six river basins, including the Barigui and Iguaçu rivers, where deliberate park design and artificial lakes help control water levels during periods of heavy rain. Curitiba features a temperate oceanic climate with mild, damp winters and comfortable summer conditions. Average daytime winter temperatures remain around 19 °C (66 °F), though polar air masses from the south can occasionally bring sharp drops in temperature, while average summer daytime temperatures hover near 25 °C (77 °F).

Curitiba is reached by air through Afonso Pena International Airport as well as Bacacheri Airport. Within the city, administrative hubs known as Streets of Citizenship are connected to public transit terminals across its nine subprefectures, providing decentralized access to local services and smooth navigation throughout the urban area.
