San Francisco de Macorís is a major city in the northeastern Dominican Republic, serving as the capital of Duarte Province within the Cibao region. Known locally as the Land of Cacao, the city and its surrounding territory are famous for cultivating large volumes of organic cocoa, a key factor in placing the Dominican Republic among the top ten cocoa bean producers globally. The city’s name combines a homage to Saint Francis of the Franciscan Order with Macorix, the historical name of the original territory.
Geographically, the city sits between the northern peaks of the Septentrional Mountain Range and the broad expanse of the Cibao Valley to the south. The Jaya River flows along the western side of the urban center, while northern hills offer wide views across the city. The province's highest point is Loma Quita Espuela, reaching 942 meters (3,091 feet) above sea level; local tradition states that early Spanish explorers had to remove their spurs to ascend its steep terrain on foot. The broader region features important water sources, including the Yuna and Camú rivers, alongside unique karst landscapes and alluvial floodplains.
The city’s early development was driven by the cocoa trade during the 18th century, which provided a profitable alternative to traditional livestock farming. Growth around the local Santa Ana monastery led to the formal establishment of the settlement in 1778 after land was donated for its founding. Following the 1795 Treaty of Basel, the area transitioned to French administration, becoming a self-governing parish by the early 19th century. Formerly organized under the District of Pacificador in 1896, the region was officially renamed Duarte Province in 1926.
