Why Ocotlán
Ocotlán is a Mexican city and municipality located in the state of Jalisco, serving as the administrative seat for the Ciénega Region. The town's name originates from a Nahuatl term for pine trees, translating to near the pines or place of the ocote. Economically, Ocotlán is widely recognized for its furniture manufacturing, hosting numerous production plants and wood-processing operations, alongside major facilities for companies such as Nestlé and Forrajes El Nogal.
Geographically, the municipality occupies an area of 247.7 square kilometers along the northeastern edge of Lake Chapala, the largest lake in Mexico. Situated at an elevation of 5,020 feet, Ocotlán borders the neighboring municipalities of Poncitlán and Tototlán and sits roughly a 50-minute drive east-southeast of Guadalajara. The surrounding state of Jalisco is celebrated for classic cultural traditions including mariachi music, tequila, Ballet Folklórico, charros, and the Mexican Hat Dance. Locally, the city is acclaimed for its birria, a flavorful spicy stew made from goat or beef.
Established in 1530, Ocotlán possesses a rich historical and religious background. The central plaza features two historic places of worship. La Purísima, built early in Jalisco's history, houses an altar dipped in gold. Nearby stands a second cathedral constructed in the late 1800s, dedicated to El Señor de la Misericordia. This structure honors a famous event from October 3, 1847, when over 2,000 residents reported seeing a vision of a crucifix in the sky following a severe earthquake the previous day. Formally recognized by the Archbishop of Guadalajara in 1911 as the Miracle of Ocotlán, this event is commemorated annually with a 13-day festival held from September 20 to October 3.
Beyond its sacred architecture, Ocotlán showcases notable contemporary structures such as the University of Guadalajara's library and media center, opened in 2000. Designed by the Guadalajara-based architectural firm LeAP, the modern facility features an expansive, multi-height lobby where stacked books serve as the primary visual focus. Residents of the city, known as Ocotlenses, experience warm weather throughout the year, with daytime temperatures rising while evenings remain cooler, alongside consistent humidity levels. The warmest months are April and May, with May reaching average highs of 89 °F, whereas January brings the coolest temperatures, averaging highs of 76 °F and lows of 44 °F.
