Why Ústí nad Labem
Ústí nad Labem is a prominent regional capital situated in the northwest of the Czech Republic, approximately 65 kilometers north of Prague and 45 kilometers south of Dresden, Germany. Located at the junction of the Elbe and Bílina rivers, the city derives its name from the Czech word for river mouth, with the suffix denoting its position on the Elbe. The surrounding landscape is largely formed by the rolling terrain of the Central Bohemian Uplands, reaching its elevation peak at the hill Široký vrch, while also extending into the Most Basin to the northwest. Additionally, the southern area forms part of the České středohoří Protected Landscape Area, and Lake Milada sits partially within the municipal borders.
Historical records first document the settlement in the 11th century, and it was officially recognized as a royal town in 1249. King Ottokar II brought German settlers to the location later in the 13th century. Over the centuries, the community endured significant disruption, including near-total destruction during the Hussite Wars in 1426, subsequent fires, and conflict during the Thirty Years' War, the Seven Years' War, and the Napoleonic Wars. Industrial growth in the 19th century transformed the municipality into a major manufacturing center and river port, leading to rapid population expansion. Toward the end of World War II, air bombardment destroyed much of the historic center, making it one of the most damaged Czech urban areas of the conflict.
Visitors to the city can explore notable historical landmarks and cultural attractions. Perched in a southern suburb, the 14th-century Střekov Castle stands as one of the most visited sites in the region. In the center of town, the 14th-century Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary features a 65-meter-tall tower that leans over two meters due to wartime bomb damage, making it the most tilted structure of its kind north of the Alps. Another focal point is the Větruše hill, featuring an observation tower and a 1847 castle building. In the Krásné Březno district, tourists can visit the Ústí nad Labem Zoo, founded in 1908, as well as Krásné Březno Castle, which combines early structural elements with Baroque modifications and is bordered by an English park. Spanning the river, the modern Mariánský most road bridge has earned international recognition for its structural engineering.
As an educational and transit hub, the city hosts the Jan Evangelista Purkyně University, serving roughly 8,500 students. Transportation links include the nearby D8 motorway between Prague and Dresden, alongside a key railway junction offering international passenger connections to cities such as Berlin, Budapest, Graz, and Zurich. Local public transit relies on an extensive network of buses and trolleybuses. On the water, the Elbe River supports both commercial shipping and passenger pleasure cruises, offering connectivity toward Germany and Western European waterways. Nearby international flight facilities are located in Prague and Dresden.
