Why Karlovy Vary

Karlovy Vary is a historic spa city in the western Czech Republic, situated approximately 106 kilometres west of Prague. Positioned at the confluence of the Ohře, Teplá, and Rolava rivers, the municipality spans the flat terrain of the Sokolov Basin in the north and the hilly landscape of the Slavkov Forest to the south. As the most visited spa town in the country, Karlovy Vary is recognized internationally as part of the Great Spa Towns of Europe UNESCO World Heritage Site, valued for its thermal waters and preserved 18th- to 20th-century urban architecture.

The city was founded around 1349 by Charles IV, Holy Roman Emperor and King of Bohemia, who according to legend discovered a hot spring while hunting and used its water to heal an injury. Granted town privileges in 1370, the settlement grew into a world-famous spa resort during the 19th century, drawing European royalty, aristocrats, and prominent public figures. Today, its central historic area along the Teplá River valley is protected as an urban monument reservation.

At the core of the city's identity are more than 80 mineral springs, 16 of which are utilized for drinking routines. The hottest spring, Vřídlo, reaches temperatures around 73.4 °C and shoots a geyser up to 12 metres high within the Hot Spring Colonnade. Visitors can stroll along grand promenades featuring ornate structures such as the pseudo-Renaissance Mill Colonnade, the wooden Market Colonnade, and the cast-iron Park Colonnade. Significant architectural landmarks include the Císařské lázně historic spa building, the Baroque Church of Saint Mary Magdalene, and the Byzantine-style Church of Saint Peter and Paul.

In addition to spa tourism, Karlovy Vary is famous for hosting the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, one of the oldest and most prominent film events in Europe. The city's historic backdrop and grand hotels, such as the Grandhotel Pupp, have frequently served as filming locations. The local economy is also linked to renowned regional products, including Becherovka herbal liqueur, Moser luxury lead glass, traditional spa wafers, and bottled mineral water.

Karlovy Vary is accessible by road via the D6 motorway, by train through České dráhy and Deutsche Bahn connections, and by air via Karlovy Vary Airport near Olšová Vrata. Public transportation includes local bus networks and funicular railways, notably the steep Imperial funicular. The area features a humid continental climate, with average monthly temperatures ranging from −1.8 °C in January to 17.2 °C in July, and peak rainfall occurring in June.
