Why Jablonec nad Nisou
Jablonec nad Nisou is the second-largest city in the Liberec Region of the Czech Republic, home to roughly 46,000 residents. Located approximately 7 kilometers southeast of Liberec and 83 kilometers northeast of Prague, it forms a close urban conurbation with its neighboring regional center. The settlement sits along the Lusatian Neisse River at its confluence with the Bílá Nisa, while the Mohelka River originates within the municipal territory.
Nestled in the eastern tip of Eastern Upper Lusatia, known as the Zittau Basin, the city is encircled to the north, east, and south by the Jizera Mountains, reaching its highest point of 758 meters on its southeastern slopes. The northern area falls within the Jizera Mountains Protected Landscape Area. A prominent feature within the urban borders is the Mšeno Reservoir, a 42-hectare body of water constructed between 1906 and 1909 that stands as one of Europe's largest inner-city reservoirs.
Initially established in the 14th century, the original village derived its Czech name from an Old Czech word meaning little apple tree. It was destroyed by fire twice in its early history—first in 1469 during a regional war and again in 1643 amid the Thirty Years' War. The settlement developed rapidly during the late 17th century with the flourishing of glassmaking, followed by the introduction of costume jewelry and bead manufacturing in the 18th century. Emperor Francis II elevated Jablonec to a market town in 1808, and Emperor Franz Joseph I granted full town status in 1866.
The historic center is protected as an urban monument zone and features interconnected public squares, including Dolní náměstí, Mírové náměstí, Horní náměstí, and Anenské náměstí. Architectural landmarks include the Old Town Hall on Dolní náměstí, built in the late 1860s and now serving as a library, and the functionalist New Town Hall built in the 1930s on Mírové náměstí. Religious sites comprise the Baroque Church of Saint Anne, the brick Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, the pseudo-Gothic Dr. Farský Church, and the Art Nouveau Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.
Visitors interested in local craftsmanship can visit the Museum of Glass and Costume Jewellery, founded in 1904 and housed in an Art Nouveau building. The city's industrial identity is further represented by major local organizations, including the Czech Mint and glassmaker Preciosa. Recreational amenities feature a swimming pool, three football and athletic stadiums, and an ice hockey arena. Public transport links include six train stops along the line connecting Liberec to Szklarska Poręba in Poland, as well as a shared intercity tramway line.
