Why Tualatin

Tualatin is an urban city situated primarily within Washington County in the U.S. state of Oregon, with a small section extending into neighboring Clackamas County. Positioned directly south of Tigard, it forms a southwestern suburban community within the broader Portland metropolitan region. The municipality takes its name from the Tualatin River, which traces a significant portion of the community's northern border. The local name derives from an indigenous Tualatin-Yamhill term translated variously as sluggish, treeless plain, or forked.

Originally established in the 1850s as Galbreath after its founder, Samuel Galbreath, the area gained the name Bridgeport following the 1853 construction of the first bridge spanning the river. During the 1880s, the settlement was platted around a fresh railway depot by John Sweek, who formally designated the area as Tualatin. A local post office adopted the modern spelling in 1915, following the municipality's official incorporation in 1913. The area's ancient natural history was highlighted by notable paleontological discoveries, including a mastodon skeleton excavated in 1962 and ground sloth remains uncovered near Fanno Creek in 1972.

Visitors to the area can explore several commercial and recreational points of interest. The city hosts Browns Ferry Park along with major outdoor lifestyle centers, including Bridgeport Village, which features an open-air layout reminiscent of European architecture built on a former quarry site. The community also features the Nyberg Woods and Nyberg Rivers commercial complexes. A prominent local historic display includes the excavated mastodon fossils, which are housed inside the lobby of the Tualatin Public Library. Additionally, the city hosts the annual West Coast Giant Pumpkin Regatta, a long-running seasonal event established in 2004.

Transportation throughout Tualatin is supported by the TriMet regional transit network, featuring local bus lines and commuter rail service via the WES at Tualatin Station, along with a regional Park & Ride hub. Medical facilities in the area include the Legacy Meridian Park Hospital. Local education is served primarily by the Tigard-Tualatin School District alongside private academic institutions.
