Orsanmichele 🇮🇹

Located on Via Calzaiuoli between Florence's civic and religious centers, Orsanmichele is a unique communal building and church defined by its rich history as a former grain market, granary, and guild oratory. When you visit, you will encounter a remarkable three-story structure that stands 40 meters high, reflecting the city's economic prosperity and artistic splendor. Step inside the ground-floor oratory to see Orcagna’s 1359 Gothic marble tabernacle, considered a high point of Italian Gothic sculpture.

Enhanced with colored glass tesserae and intricate reliefs of the Life of the Virgin, it encases Bernardo Daddi’s 1347 panel painting, the miraculous Maestà. Outside, you can admire the sculptural program spanning all four façades. Framed niches around the exterior once showcased statues depicting the patron saints of Florence’s major guilds, created by Early Renaissance masters including Lorenzo Ghiberti, Donatello, and Nanni di Banco.

Though the exterior sculptures are copies today, you can explore many of the original marble and bronze masterpieces in the museum located on the upper floor of the building. With its fascinating blend of commercial, civic, and spiritual heritage, Orsanmichele offers you a rare, captivating window into 14th-century Florentine life and art.
