Why Agua Prieta
Agua Prieta is a border city situated in the northeastern corner of the Mexican state of Sonora, serving as the seat of a municipality spanning over 3,600 square kilometers. Its name translates to "dark water" in Spanish, reflecting its indigenous Ópata designation, Bachicuy. Situated on a continental plateau, the city experiences a cold semi-arid climate characterized by wide daily temperature swings. Winters are cold, while summers are typically very hot with afternoon temperatures reaching well above 30 °C. Cloud cover is generally low and dry conditions prevail for much of the year, though precipitation increases notably during July and August.
The settlement emerged in the late 19th century alongside the construction of a railroad connecting Nacozari, Sonora, to Douglas, Arizona, which sits directly across the United States border. Initial residents were primarily employed by the Arizona-based Phelps Dodge Corporation mining company. After being designated a commissary of the municipality of Fronteras in 1903, Agua Prieta became an independent municipality in 1916 under its first president, Rodolfo L. Márquez. The community was classified as a town in 1933 and officially gained city status in 1942.
Agua Prieta holds a significant place in modern Mexican political history. Future presidents Plutarco Elías Calles and Lázaro Cárdenas resided here during the municipality's early years. The Hotel Central served as the seat of Venustiano Carranza's constitutional government in 1914. The town was also the site of a 1915 night battle where Calles' forces repelled an attack by Pancho Villa using powerful searchlights. In 1920, political figures signed the Plan de Agua Prieta in a local shop near the border, calling for the end of Carranza's presidency and invoking the 1917 Constitution.
Today, the city hosts several manufacturing facilities, known as maquiladoras, representing companies such as Levolor, Velcro, Joyson Safety Systems, Commercial Vehicle Group, Standex-Meder Electronics, and Alstyle Apparel & Activewear. It is also home to the Agua Prieta II facility, a major integrated solar combined-cycle power plant that utilizes parabolic solar collectors to generate electricity for northwest Mexico. In cultural life, Agua Prieta is recognized as the birthplace of Los Apson, an influential 1960s musical group that helped shape the country's rock music movement. Local sports center on baseball, led by the Toros de Agua Prieta team, alongside soccer and basketball.
Travelers reach Agua Prieta via Mexican Federal Highways 2 and 17, which connect the city to the rest of the country. The destination is linked directly to Douglas, Arizona, through a dedicated port of entry along the international border.
