Why Aguascalientes City
Located on the central plateau within the Bajío region of North-Central Mexico, Aguascalientes City rests in a valley roughly 1,880 meters above sea level. Its name, which translates to "hot waters," originates from the thermal springs scattered across the area. Established in 1575 as a Spanish outpost and rest stop along the Silver Route to protect shipments from the local Chichimeca people, the settlement eventually grew to become a state capital. Today, it serves as a major urban and economic hub within a metropolitan area that encompasses the nearby municipalities of Jesús María and San Francisco de los Romo.
The city's historical identity is rooted in several distinct neighborhoods clustered around the central Plaza de la Patria. The Barrio del Encino, historically known as Triana, is the oldest quarter and features the Baroque Templo del Señor del Encino. The Barrio de San Marcos originated as an early 17th-century indigenous settlement and is centered around its historic temple and leafy public gardens. In the Barrio de Guadalupe, established along historic trade routes and known for pottery traditions, stands a late 18th-century sanctuary crowned with Talavera tiles. The Barrio de la Salud reflects its working-class past through single-story homes, while the Barrio de la Estación preserves the architectural heritage of the city's late 19th-century railway expansion.
Visitors to Aguascalientes can tour numerous landmarks and cultural institutions. Downtown highlights include the red volcanic stone Government Palace, famous for its hundred arches, and the city's historic Cathedral. Museums include the José Guadalupe Posada Museum, the Aguascalientes Museum, the State History Museum inside an Art Nouveau mansion, and the interactive Descubre science museum. Thermal traditions persist at sites like Ojocaliente, a functional bathhouse fed by natural hot springs, and the former Los Arquitos bathhouse, now a cultural monument. The city also hosts the massive annual San Marcos Fair, a springtime celebration centered in the San Marcos district.
Aguascalientes experiences a semi-arid climate, with the majority of precipitation arriving between June and September. Travel within the urban center is aided by a planned system of concentric ring roads and an expanding network of green bicycle pathways. Air travelers access the region via Lic. Jesús Terán Peredo International Airport, which provides domestic connections alongside direct international flights to select major American cities.
