When you visit Baghdad's Mansour neighbourhood, the Al-Rahman Mosque—meaning Mosque of The Most Merciful—presents a compelling look into Iraq's complex architectural past. Commissioned by former President Saddam Hussein as part of the Faith campaign, this ambitious project was intended to rival India's Taj Mahal and become one of the largest mosques in the world, capable of accommodating 15,000 worshippers. However, construction halted during the 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq, leaving behind a massive, unfinished 4.5-hectare concrete skeleton.
As you view the site, built on an old horse racing field, you will see a colossal main incomplete dome spanning roughly 250 metres (820 feet) in diameter. This central structural element is surrounded by eight smaller independent domes, each featuring eight even smaller domes integrated directly into their walls. Original plans called for gold-decorated faience, private and public corridors, entrances, and service buildings reflecting contemporary Arab, Islamic, and Iraqi architecture.
Today, despite years of ownership disputes, militia takeover, and abandonment, the site stands as a monumental reflection of Baghdad's recent history. Exploring these vast, uncompleted structural ruins allows you to experience a unique, honest perspective on the city's modern story and architectural ambition.
