Mosque of Ahmadiyah

Located on al-Rashid Street in the al-Rusafa district of Baghdad, the Mosque-Madrasa of al-Ahmadiyya (also known as the al-Maidan Mosque) offers a fascinating glimpse into Mamluk-era history. Commissioned in 1796 by Ahmad al-Katkhadha and completed by his brother Abdullah Beu, this historic Sunni complex sits east of al-Maidan Square near the al-Muradiyya Mosque. When you visit, you will encounter a 2,600-square-meter site featuring a two-story madrasa building and a main mosque complex linked by a high-walled courtyard with four distinct gates.

The architecture showcases impressive 2.5-meter-thick walls built for Baghdad's climate, a summer mihrab with muqarnas, and a double-dome structure topped with Qashani tiles. Inside, a wide musalla leads to a summer prayer area, while the walls feature exquisite 1850 Qur'anic calligraphy by Sufyan al-Wahbi, who rests in the courtyard. Outside, admire the tall minaret adorned with multi-colored faience work, geometric patterns, an octagonal base, and a ribbed dome top.

Though the complex has faced historical changes—including a dome collapse in 2019 followed by major restoration efforts—it remains a vital piece of Baghdad's architectural heritage.
