Ali Qapu

As an imperial palace in Isfahan, Iran, Ali Qapu stands forty-eight meters high on the western side of the UNESCO-listed Naqsh-e Jahan Square, directly opposite the Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque. Originally built by decree of Shah Abbas the Great in the early 17th century as a grand portal entrance stretching toward Chaharbagh Boulevard, it offers you a chance to explore a symbol of Iran's Islamic heritage and Safavid architecture. When you visit, you will navigate six distinct floors using a difficult spiral staircase or the Kingly Stairway.

On the first floor, you will find the former chancellery. As you ascend, explore the third floor's magnificent hall where 18 mirror-covered columns support a ceiling adorned with great paintings, and admire the single surviving original window. On the top floor, enter the famous Music Hall, where royal receptions were held.

Here, you can marvel at naturalistic wall paintings by court painter Reza Abbasi, depicting floral, animal, and bird motifs, alongside delicate stucco wall cutouts shaped like vessels and cups that enhance room acoustics. Finally, step out onto the galleries where Safavid shahs once watched polo, horse-racing, and army maneuvers below in the square.
