Located in the Cantonment area of Lucknow, India, All Saints Garrison Church offers you a fascinating glimpse into military and architectural history. Originally built in 1860 as a smaller structure, the church was expanded and rechristened as All Saints New Garrison Church after a 1908 decision to accommodate the growing number of troops. It holds a distinct place in history as the first church built for the Anglican Church. As you explore, you will admire an imposing design inspired by Magdalen College, Oxford.
Designed by British engineer Jones Ransom—who also designed Saint Mungo's Church of Scotland in Lucknow Cantonment—the construction was later completed by Lishman under architect John Baggs' supervision. To save on its Rs. 91,000 budget, the tower was built slightly shorter than planned, and the side walls were reduced in height and thickness. When you step inside, head to the west main door to see the tall tower that houses the church bell above it.
Be sure to wander through the large quadrangle and inspect the ply seating areas. The most striking feature to see on these benches is the special niche built into the upper-back side of every single seat, specifically designed for keeping guns.
