You will find Chattar Manzil, also known as the Umbrella Palace, standing proudly on the banks of the River Gomti in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. Originally constructed under Nawab Ghazi Uddin Haider and finished by Nawab Nasir Uddin Haider, this imposing historical structure served as a grand palace for the rulers of Awadh and their wives. If you appreciate rich history and unique architecture, you should visit to admire its distinctive Indo-European-Nawabi design.
When you explore the site, you can gaze up at the octagonal pavilions crowned with umbrella-shaped domes, known as chattris, including a notable main dome surmounted by a gilt umbrella. You can also learn about its large underground rooms and complex past. Over the centuries, the site has evolved significantly—from serving as a revolutionary stronghold during the Indian Rebellion of 1857, when part of it was destroyed by the British, to housing the United Services Club and later the Central Drug Research Institute.
Today, as the state archaeological department renovates the palace, plans are underway to establish two museums and a library inside. Movie buffs might even recognize it as a shooting location for the Hindi film Jolly LLB 2.
