Jama Mosque 🇮🇳

If you are exploring Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, be sure to visit the historic Jama Mosque, also known as the Jama Masjid. Located in the Husainabad area, this striking Shi'ite Friday mosque offers you a fascinating look into the architectural ambitions of Awadh's royal history. Construction began in 1839 CE under Muhammad Ali Shah, the third Badshah of Awadh, who set out to build a structure that would surpass Delhi's famous Jama Masjid in size.

Following his death, his wife, Queen Malika Jahan Sahiba, completed the mosque in 1845 CE. Today, it stands as a Monument of National Importance under the care of the Archaeological Survey of India. When you arrive, you will see a grand structure built with Lakhauri bricks, finished in lime plaster, and adorned with vibrant coloured stucco motifs.

Perched on a high square terrace, the mosque features a magnificent western prayer hall façade boasting eleven arches, dominated by a tall central doorway with a sharply pointed arch. Above, three high double, pear-shaped domes crowned with inverted lotuses rise into the skyline, flanked by two towering four-storeyed octagonal minarets topped with traditional Chhatries. Just south of the mosque, you can also view the Imambara Malika Jahan.
