Located in the business center of Konya within the Karatay district, Aziziye Mosque is a captivating 19th-century Ottoman structure that stands out for its unique architectural design. While the original 17th-century mosque was destroyed by a fire in 1867, it was recommissioned in 1874 by Pertevniyal, mother of Sultan Abdülaziz. Built with cut stone, the mosque boasts a distinctive elevated main floor accessed by stairs, a square-shaped praying hall beneath a large central dome, and a narthex featuring three smaller domes resting on six marble pillars. As you explore the interior, look out for the beautiful bluish marble used to construct the mihrab and minbar. You will also notice unconventional proportions, including windows that are strikingly wider than the doors, an intimate floorspace without a yard, and integrated water fountains (şadırvans) attached directly to the minarets.
