Why Konya

Konya is a major city in central Turkey, located on the southwestern edge of the Central Anatolian Plateau within the expanse of the Konya Plain. Hemmed in to the south by the Taurus Mountains, it serves as the capital of Konya Province and ranks as the second most populous city in the Central Anatolia Region. Rich in heritage, Konya is widely recognized as an influential historic center and the spiritual home of the Mevlevi Sufi Order, famous for its Whirling Dervishes.

Human settlement in the region dates back to the Late Copper Age around 3000 BC. Known in antiquity as Iconium, the region passed through the hands of the Hittites, Phrygians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, and Byzantines, and was visited by Saint Paul during his missionary journeys. In the late medieval era, the city served as the capital of the Seljuk Sultanate of Rum, reaching its peak of prosperity and regional influence. It later came under Karamanid control before being incorporated into the Ottoman Empire in the 15th century.

The city's main landmark is the Mevlana Museum, which houses the turquoise-domed tomb of the mystic Rumi. Architectural and historical sights include the Alaaddin, Selimiye, Sahib-i Ata, and Aziziye mosques, alongside historic medreses such as Ince Minaret, Karatay, and Sırçalı. Cultural institutions range from the Konya Archaeological and Ethnography Museum and Koyunoğlu Museum to the Konya Science Centre and the Konya Tropical Butterfly Garden. Short excursions outside the core lead to the picnicking spot of Meram, the historic village of Sille with its cave churches, and the prehistoric site of Çatalhöyük.

Spiritual Whirling Dervish sema sessions take place every Saturday at the Mevlana Cultural Centre, alongside the annual Mevlana Festival. Konya is also famous for its traditional woven carpets. Local culinary specialties feature etli ekmek—sliced lamb served on soft bread—as well as long pides, meat-and-vegetable tirit rice dishes, and sweets like carrot-based cezerye and pişmaniye.

Konya has a cold semi-arid climate with summer daytime temperatures averaging 30 °C (86 °F) and winter temperatures averaging −4.2 °C (24 °F), with most precipitation falling in winter, spring, and autumn. The city is connected by high-speed rail to Istanbul, Ankara, Eskişehir, and Karaman, and by long-distance buses to various regions. Konya Airport offers flight services from Istanbul and İzmir, while inner-city travel is facilitated by local bus lines and a multi-line tram system.
