When you visit the city of Konya, Turkey, make sure to explore the historic Selimiye Mosque, also known as the Selim II Mosque or Selimiye Camisi. Located in the Karatay secondary municipality right in the bustling business center, this classic 16th-century Ottoman landmark sits directly next to the Mevlâna Museum, the famous funerary shrine complex of Persian Sufi mystic Mevlana Celalüddin Rumi. You will find it situated just east of the Aziziye Mosque.
Originally commissioned in 1558 by Selim II during his time as a prince and sanjak governor, the construction was finished in 1570 after he ascended as sultan. Curiously, while Mimar Sinan was chief architect during its build, the mosque is not included in his autobiographies. Restored over the centuries in 1685, 1816, and 1914, the structure features double minarets and closely resembles Istanbul's Fatih Mosque.
Inside, you can admire a main praying area roofed by a big dome, complemented by seven small domes over the portico. Take time to view its finest details, including a mihrab made of blue marble and a minbar carved from white marble.
