Why Bhopal

Bhopal is the capital city of the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, serving as the administrative headquarters for both its surrounding district and division. Positioned on the Malwa plateau just north of the upper Vindhya mountain range, the city sits at an average elevation of 500 meters. Widely referred to as the City of Lakes because of its many natural and artificial water bodies, Bhopal is also recognized as one of the country's greenest and cleanest state capitals.

The city features an uneven landscape characterized by small hills, including the Idgah, Arera, and Shyamala hills in the north, and the Katara hills to the south. Geographically, the urban region is split into two main sections: Old Bhopal in the north, situated near the lakes and VIP road, and New Bhopal in the south. The surrounding terrain encompasses 17 lakes and several major reservoirs. Key aquatic sites include the expansive Upper Lake (Bhojtal), constructed in the 11th century, the adjacent Lower Lake, and reservoirs such as Kerwa, Kaliyasot, and Kolar.

According to historical accounts, the city traces its origins to the 11th-century Paramara ruler King Bhoja, from whose name and local lake-dam constructions the moniker Bhojpal—and eventually Bhopal—derived. Modern Bhopal was established in the early 18th century by Dost Mohammad Khan, an army soldier who constructed Fatehgarh fort and created the sovereign Bhopal State. After falling under Maratha control in 1737, the princely state eventually entered into a treaty with the British in 1818. Between 1819 and 1926, Bhopal was uniquely governed by four successive female rulers, known as Begums, who established the city's civic municipality, postal system, modern waterworks, and rail connections. Bhopal merged into the Indian Union in 1949.

In addition to its royal lineage, Bhopal serves as a key financial and educational center within Madhya Pradesh. The city hosts prominent research institutes, ISRO's Master Control Facility, and the Regional Science Centre. Bhopal also attracted global focus in December 1984 due to a catastrophic industrial gas leak from a local pesticide plant, an event that continues to influence local environmental restoration and socio-political discussions.

Bhopal experiences a humid subtropical climate with three distinct seasons. Summers run from late March to mid-June, with temperatures frequently rising above 40 °C during May. The monsoon season brings heavy precipitation and thunderstorms between late June and late September, averaging around 1,020 millimeters of rainfall. Winters set in by early November and continue through early March, delivering cool, dry conditions with average daily temperatures around 18 °C, though nighttime lows in January occasionally approach freezing.
