Nestled inside Kamla Park, Kamlapati Palace sits on the bridge between Bhopal's larger and smaller lakes, positioning you on the eastern side of the ancient Bhojpal embankment originally built by Parmara Rajput King Bhoj. Constructed in 1722, this historic structure was built by Gond ruler Nizam Shah as a symbol of love for his wife, Rani Kamlapati, and stands today as the earliest surviving architectural example in Bhopal Town. Preserved by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) as a Monument of National Importance, it offers you a direct connection to the city's origins.
When you visit, you will observe a fine example of early 18th-century contemporary secular architecture. The double-storied building features crafted lakhauri bricks and a striking facade with cusped arches resting on fluted pillars. As you explore the monument, look for lotus petal-shaped merlons and decorative brackets supporting the chhajjas.
Looking outward to the west, you can also view the hillside remains of Fatehgarh Fort, built by Sardar Dost Mohammad Khan who laid the foundation of modern Bhopal. It is an ideal spot to absorb the rich regional heritage and enduring history of Bhopal.
