Why Boise

Boise is the capital and most populous city in the U.S. state of Idaho, serving as the county seat of Ada County. Situated along the Boise River in southwestern Idaho, the city lies within the high-desert landscape of the Treasure Valley at a downtown elevation of 2,704 feet (824 m) above sea level. It is located 41 miles (66 km) east of the Oregon border and 110 miles (177 km) north of the Nevada border. The city recorded a population of 235,685 during the 2020 census, while its broader five-county metropolitan area encompasses approximately 846,000 residents, making it the largest metropolitan center in Idaho.

The Boise Valley was traditionally home to indigenous groups including the Northern Shoshone and Bannock tribes, who used the location as a center for trade and winter settlement. Non-native explorers and fur trappers noted the stark contrast between the surrounding arid terrain and the river valley's cottonwood trees. In the 1820s, French Canadian trappers referred to the waterway as "la rivière boisée" (the wooded river), giving rise to the city's name and its enduring nickname as the "City of Trees." Public interest in tree-planting projects began early in its settlement, supported by efforts such as the planting of thousands of fruit trees in 1864.

The town was established following the 1863 discovery of gold in the region. That same year, the United States Military founded a new Fort Boise near the intersection of the Oregon Trail and roads leading to the booming mining centers of the Boise Basin and Owyhee. Boise became the territorial capital in 1864 and formally incorporated in 1868. Early development was driven by agriculture, canal building, toll roads, and supplying regional mining towns. In modern times, the city serves as an economic hub supported by technology, manufacturing, and service industries, including facilities for major corporations such as Micron Technology and Hewlett-Packard.

Visitors to Boise can experience several historic and cultural landmarks. Downtown Boise houses the Idaho State Capitol building as well as the U.S. Assay Office on Main Street, a National Historic Landmark constructed in 1871. Cultural attractions include the Boise Art Museum, the Basque Block, and the annual Treefort Music Fest. Located a few miles east of downtown, the Old Idaho State Penitentiary offers historic architecture dating back to its opening in 1872.
