When you visit Chapaev Square in Samara, you will stand before a historic masterpiece: the Monument to Vasily Chapaev. Positioned directly in front of the drama theatre, this impressive structure was erected in 1932 to mark the 15th anniversary of the October Revolution. Designed by architect Iosif Langbard and sculptor Matvey Manizer, it holds a unique place in history as the first multi-figure equestrian sculpture in Soviet art.
Look closely at the multi-figure bronze composition, which stands 1.5 times the average human height. You will see Vasily Chapaev on horseback wielding a sabre, surrounded by realistic civil war figures including a commissar, a partisan peasant, a sailor, a female in a headscarf, a Tatar soldier in a torn shirt, and a Bashkir soldier rising from the ground. Remarkably, Manizer modeled Chapaev's face on his son Alexander, while Bashkir poet Gaisa Yusupov posed for the Bashkir soldier.
As you admire this 10-meter-tall landmark, check out its massive base and the 12 tonnes of bronze used in its casting. Pay special attention to the pedestal, plated in polished black labradorite, which features a stirring quote by Vladimir Lenin encouraging comrades to persevere for victory. It is an extraordinary piece of monumental history.
