Why Samara

Samara is the administrative capital and largest city of Samara Oblast in Russia, situated at the confluence of the Volga and Samara rivers. Covering an area of 541.4 square kilometers, it is the ninth-largest city in the country and one of the primary population centers in the Volga Federal District. Home to more than 1.14 million residents, the city has long been defined by its relationship with the Volga River, whose picturesque riverfront serves as a primary recreational zone for both visitors and residents.

The region's documented history traces back centuries, including a visit by Ahmad ibn Fadlan in 921 during the era of Volga Bulgar rule, as well as appearances on 14th-century Italian navigation maps. Before an official outpost was established, the local river bend was notorious as a shelter for pirates. Formal settlement began in 1586 when a decree by Tsar Fyodor Ioannovich led to the construction of a wooden frontier fortress to defend Russia's eastern borders. Over time, neighboring settlements integrated, a structured street grid was implemented in the late 18th century, and Samara became the center of its own governorate in 1851.

Known as Kuybyshev from 1935 to 1991, the city developed into a key industrial and defense hub. During World War II, it was designated as the alternative capital of the Soviet Union from October 1941 to the summer of 1943, prompting the construction of an underground dugout termed Stalin's Bunker, which was ultimately never used. In the postwar era, the municipality functioned as a closed city and a prominent center for the Soviet space program. The Progress facility produced the Vostok rocket that propelled Yuri Gagarin into orbit in 1961, and Gagarin rested in the city following his historic flight.

Samara reclaimed its original name in 1991 and continues to operate as a major economic center driven by petrochemical and oil industries. Visitors to the city can explore historical and cultural landmarks, including Strukovsky Garden overlooking the river, Samara Square, and an Ilyushin Il-2 ground-attack aircraft displayed as a wartime monument. Additional features include a 26-meter glass and metal stele installed along Young Pioneers Avenue and the Samara Arena stadium, which hosted matches for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. The region experiences a continental climate marked by cold winters and hot summers.
