Why Chomutov
Chomutov is a statutory city located in the Ústí nad Labem Region of the Czech Republic, situated approximately 78 kilometres northwest of Prague. Positioned in the foothills of the Ore Mountains along the Chomutovka River, the surrounding terrain is predominantly flat, rising to its highest elevation at the 581-metre peak of Hůrka on the northwestern border. Historically, the settlement was named after a personal name signifying a clumsy individual in Old Czech. Today, the urban municipality consists of a single administrative section.
First documented in 1252 as a possession of the Teutonic Order, the settlement received its town charter in 1396 before being acquired by King Wenceslaus IV in 1416. Following a destruction by the Taborites in 1421, the community shifted through various ownerships until the late 16th century, when Popel of Lobkowicz introduced Jesuit authority. The town bought its independence to become a royal city in 1605, though it experienced stagnation following the Thirty Years' War. Significant expansion occurred during the mid-19th century through industrialization and lignite mining. Heavy industry diminished after 1989, shifting local focus toward environmental improvement and recreational amenities.
The historical core of Chomutov is recognized as a protected urban monument zone arranged in an oblong layout featuring traditional arcades. At Náměstí 1. máje, visitors can view a 1697 Baroque Trinity Column flanked by 18th-century statues of saints. Surrounding architectural landmarks include the city hall—formerly a commendam—and the adjacent 13th-century Gothic Church of Saint Catherine. Nearby, the 16th-century late-Gothic Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary stands next to the 53.7-metre City Tower, which functions as a lookout point. Additional historical structures include the 17th-century Baroque Church of Saint Ignatius, designed by Carlo Lurago, an adjoining former church now operating as an art gallery, and a former Jesuit college that houses the city museum.
For outdoor recreation, the area features Zoopark Chomutov, which covers 112 hectares and focuses primarily on native European and domestic wildlife such as wolves and European bison. Adjacent to the zoo lie the recreational waters of Lake Kamencové jezero and the Velký Otvický rybník pond. Nature enthusiasts can also explore Bezručovo údolí, a 13-kilometre forested river valley stretching north from the city. Local sports infrastructure includes the Zadní Vinohrady complex—equipped with a water park and athletic facilities—and the Domovinka grounds, which offer sports courts and artificial hills for sledding.
Chomutov is accessible via major transport links, including the D7 motorway from Prague to the German border and the I/13 road. The city serves as a junction for multiple regional railway lines, served by both the main Chomutov station and Chomutov město. Local transit within the city and to the adjacent town of Jirkov is provided by a combined network of buses and trolleybuses.
