Why Ciudad Juárez
Located along the Rio Grande in the state of Chihuahua, Ciudad Juárez is the most populous city in the region. Situated directly south of El Paso, Texas, it forms part of the second largest binational urban region along the Mexico–United States border. The municipality serves as a major gateway for transit and commerce, linked across the international river boundary by several prominent crossing points, including the Bridge of the Americas, the Ysleta–Zaragoza International Bridge, the Paso del Norte Bridge, and the Stanton Street Bridge.
Set within the high-altitude environment of the Chihuahuan Desert, Ciudad Juárez experiences a hot desert climate characterized by distinct seasonal shifts. Summers bring high temperatures, while spring and autumn offer milder conditions. Winters are cold, with occasional snowfall taking place between November and March. Precipitation remains limited throughout the year, with the majority of rainfall occurring during the summer months.
The city was established in 1659 under the name El Paso del Norte by a Franciscan friar, with the Guadalupe Mission serving as the area's initial permanent Spanish settlement. It quickly grew into an essential trading node along the historic trade route connecting Santa Fe and Chihuahua. Over time, original native populations and refugees from regional conflicts settled around its early missions and forts. In 1888, the municipality was officially renamed to honor Benito Juárez, who had temporarily based his republican forces there during the 1860s.
The urban area expanded significantly during the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries, driven by the introduction of the Mexican Central Railway and local commercial policies. Key historical features include the city's central square, framed by arched porticos, and public structures designed with neo-colonial facades. The mid-twentieth-century cathedral stands as a notable architectural landmark in the historic city center, alongside established commercial corridors such as September 16 Avenue.
Today, Ciudad Juárez is a major industrial and economic center, characterized by a substantial presence of assembly facilities and technology research centers. The sprawling city encompasses a diverse collection of neighborhoods, ranging from residential areas like Campestre, Campos Elíseos, and Misión de Los Lagos to various middle- and working-class districts such as Infonavit and Las Misiones.
