When you explore downtown Providence, Rhode Island, you are walking through a fascinating history of urban transformation centered around the famous Crawford Street Bridge. Originally constructed between 1873 and 1904, and later rebuilt starting in 1930, this remarkable structure was built from concrete and steel across the Providence River. Rather than a standard crossing, it was actually a set of abutting bridges that spanned the river, covering an incredible area of over three acres and nearly a quarter mile of the waterway.
Reaching a staggering width of 1,147 feet (350 meters), it proudly held the title of the world's widest bridge and was officially listed in the 1988 Guinness Book of World Records. Although you will no longer see this massive structure intact today, its legacy shapes the modern waterfront. Between 1985 and 1995, as part of a major downtown redevelopment project, the immense bridge was substantially demolished.
It was thoughtfully replaced with several narrower bridges for individual streets, exposing the Providence River underneath to craft a far more pedestrian-friendly cityscape for you to enjoy during your travels through Rhode Island's state capital.
