Located along the Woonasquatucket River in downtown Providence, Rhode Island, Waterplace Park offers you a scenic urban retreat rooted deep in the city's history. Built at the original site of the Great Salt Cove, which was completely filled in by 1900, this vibrant park was completed in 1994 as part of a major River Relocation Project designed to revitalize downtown. When you visit, you can explore three-quarters of a mile of cobblestone-paved pedestrian walkways known as the Riverwalk.

These paths lie mostly below street level, allowing you to peacefully stroll away from automotive traffic. As you wander along the waterfront, you will cross picturesque, Venice-styled pedestrian bridges spanning the river, providing wonderful views of the surrounding city center. If you visit during the summertime, you can experience the park and Riverwalk transformed by Providence's famous WaterFire events.

During these popular gatherings, a captivating series of bonfires are lit directly on the river, filling the air with classical and world music. Whether you want to appreciate how Providence transformed its former waterways or simply take a relaxing stroll beneath street level, Waterplace Park provides a uniquely tranquil, historic waterfront escape right in the heart of Rhode Island's capital.
