Why Dakar

Dakar, the capital and largest urban center of Senegal, is situated on the Cap-Vert peninsula, marking the westernmost point of the African mainland. Positioned along the Atlantic coastline, this city serves as a primary financial, administrative, and cultural hub for West Africa. Over the centuries, its strategic geographic position transformed it from a series of coastal villages into a major maritime gateway and regional metropolis.

The region was initially settled by the Lebu people, whose historic villages—including Ouakam, Ngor, Yoff, and Hann—remain distinct neighborhoods within the modern urban expanse. European traders began visiting the bay in the 15th century, eventually establishing a presence on nearby Gorée Island, which became a prominent center for the transatlantic slave trade and houses the landmark House of Slaves built in 1776. France annexed the mainland Lebou Republic in 1857, developing the port and railway connections. Dakar replaced Saint-Louis as the capital of French West Africa in 1902 and later became the capital of independent Senegal in 1960. Today, the city's historic layout reflects this past, spanning the commercial Plateau district, the Médina quarter, and surrounding coastal communities.

Modern Dakar hosts numerous national and regional institutions, including the Central Bank of West African States, as well as various non-governmental organizations and international research centers. The metropolis is home to a diverse population, featuring established Lebanese, Moroccan, Mauritanian, Cape Verdean, and Guinean communities alongside French expatriates. Historically known as the finish line for the Dakar Rally from 1978 to 2007, the city continues to host international events and is scheduled to hold the 2026 Summer Youth Olympics.

Dakar experiences an ocean-influenced tropical hot semi-arid climate, marked by a brief rainy season from July to October and an extended dry season lasting eight months. The area receives approximately 411 millimeters of annual rainfall. Between December and May, daytime temperatures generally average between 25 and 28 degrees Celsius, while warmer conditions from May to November see daily highs reach 29 to 31 degrees Celsius. Constant ocean breezes moderate the peninsula's climate throughout the year, keeping coastal temperatures cooler than those found farther inland.
