Welcome to the Théodore Monod African Art Museum in Dakar, Senegal, historically known as the IFAN Museum of African Arts. As one of the oldest art museums in West Africa, this prestigious institution offers you a deep journey into the region's rich heritage. Promoted by Léopold Senghor, Senegal’s first President, the museum is part of the Institut Fondamental d'Afrique Noire and Cheikh Anta Diop University.
Located at Place Soweto near the National Assembly of Senegal, the building itself was converted into a museum in 1960 after IFAN's transfer to the university. Originally established in 1936 as the main cultural research center for the colonies of French West Africa, it houses important historical collections gathered from across Francophone Africa. Beyond its traditional treasures, you can also experience contemporary creativity here, as the museum serves as a regular venue for the famous Dakar Biennale exhibition.
During these events, you will see dynamic artworks created by contemporary African and diaspora artists. Renamed in 2007 to honor French naturalist and former IFAN director Théodore André Monod, this landmark stands as a premier destination for studying African culture, connecting you directly to West Africa's vibrant artistic past and present.
