IFAN Museum of African Arts

Welcome to the Théodore Monod African Art Museum in Dakar, Senegal, historically known as the IFAN Museum of African Arts. As one of the oldest art museums in West Africa, this prestigious institution offers you a deep journey into the region's rich heritage. Promoted by Léopold Senghor, Senegal’s first President, the museum is part of the Institut Fondamental d'Afrique Noire and Cheikh Anta Diop University.

Located at Place Soweto near the National Assembly of Senegal, the building itself was converted into a museum in 1960 after IFAN's transfer to the university. Originally established in 1936 as the main cultural research center for the colonies of French West Africa, it houses important historical collections gathered from across Francophone Africa.
