Located on Gorée Island in the bay of Dakar, Senegal, the Historical Museum of Senegal offers a deep journey through the nation's past. Attached to the Institut fondamental d'Afrique noire (IFAN), this fascinating site is housed inside a historical fort built between 1852 and 1856 by French colonial administrator Emile Pinet-Laparde to defend Dakar harbour. Named after Vice-Admiral Jean II d'Estrées, the 1,900-square-meter structure later served as a prison before being transformed into a museum under the direction of Belgian anthropologist Guy Thilmans and inaugurated in 1989.

You will explore 13 specialized rooms detailing Senegal's trajectory from ancient times to modern independence. As you walk through, you will discover artifacts dating back to the Stone Age, exhibits on the Paleolithic and Neolithic periods, and displays covering marine life along the coast. Highlights include a room dedicated to UNESCO-listed Senegambian stone circles, maps of Gorée Island, details on regional kingdoms, and exhibits honoring resistance figures like King Lat Jor.

Additional rooms explore the slave trade, European colonization, Islam, independence, ethnic groups, and traditional handicrafts, making it an essential stop to appreciate West African history.
