When you visit Charlotte, North Carolina, a stop by 927 Elizabeth Street brings you to a unique piece of Mecklenburg County history: the East Avenue Tabernacle Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, also known as the Great Aunt Stella Center. Designed by architect James M. McMichael, this notable Classical Revival landmark offers you an impressive look at historic architecture. As you admire the building, you will notice its core features, starting with its two-story sanctuary built in 1914 and a four-story educational wing added to the south side in 1925.
Look closely at the architectural design: the sanctuary displays a Greek cross plan centered around a central octagon with shallow two-story wings ending in low parapeted walls. Above, a striking copper dome caps the structure, complemented by a monumental porch featuring a brick pediment. Beyond its physical design, the property holds a rich local history. In 1998, East Avenue Tabernacle merged with Craig Avenue Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, becoming the Craig Avenue Tabernacle A.R.P.
Church. Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005, the building now houses a community center and charter school.
