When you explore the historic medina of Casablanca, Morocco, you can visit the Ettedgui Synagogue, historically recognized as one of the city's most important Jewish sites. Standing alongside another historic house of worship, the Synagogue of the People of Essaouira, this remarkable sanctuary carries a deep history. The original structure was tragically destroyed in November 1942 during the Allied bombardment of the Naval Battle of Casablanca.
For more than half a century, the site remained in ruins until an extensive reconstruction project finally began in 2011. Supported by a government grant of approximately $844,000 according to the Maghreb Arab Press, the synagogue was carefully restored and officially rededicated by King Mohammed VI of Morocco on December 20, 2016. Today, when you walk through this beautifully rebuilt site, you can appreciate Casablanca's rich heritage and Jewish history.
Right next door to the synagogue, you will also find a dedicated museum focused on the Mellah of Casablanca, the quarter traditionally inhabited by the city's Jewish community.
