Mohammadi Mosque 🇲🇦

Located in the Habous quarter of Casablanca, Morocco, the Al-Mohammadi Mosque is a massive historic site built circa 1935. Sponsored by Sultan Mohammed V, who personally laid its first stone on June 30, 1934, and inaugurated the finished site on June 12, 1936, this impressive structure reflects traditional Moroccan Islamic architecture.

Designed by architect Auguste Cadet, who also designed other buildings in the Habous quarter such as the nearby al-Yusufi Mosque, the construction was supervised by architects Abad and Ben Omar, and the mosque underwent a major restoration in 2007. Spanning an impressive area of around 3,600 square meters (39,000 square feet), the mosque can accommodate up to 6,000 or 8,000 worshippers.

As you explore its design features, you will discover architectural references to iconic Moroccan monuments: its minaret is modeled on the famous minaret of the Kutubiyya Mosque in Marrakesh, while its courtyard is modeled on the historic Qarawiyyin Mosque in Fes. Visiting this notable site allows you to appreciate how classic Moroccan artistic traditions were thoughtfully woven into the architectural heritage of twentieth-century Casablanca.
