Spanning the one-mile-wide Golden Gate strait where the San Francisco Bay meets the Pacific Ocean, the Golden Gate Bridge stands as an internationally recognized symbol of California and a Wonder of the Modern World. Connecting the northern tip of San Francisco to Marin County, this iconic suspension bridge carries vehicles along U.S. Route 101 and California State Route 1, while welcoming pedestrian and bicycle traffic along U.S.

Bicycle Route 95. Described by Frommer's travel guide as possibly the most beautiful and certainly the most photographed bridge in the world, it offers you unforgettable views. As you explore, you can admire its distinctive International Orange color and elegant Art Deco details, including decorative towers, streetlights, railings, and walkways.

Look toward the southern abutment to spot the graceful steel arch designed by Charles Alton Ellis to preserve pre–Civil War Fort Point. Reaching a total height of 746 feet with a 4,200-foot main span, this landmark opened in May 1937. Finish your trip at the southeastern end, where you will find a tourist plaza and the historic Art Deco Round House Café diner.
