Why Guadalajara

Guadalajara, the capital of the western Mexican state of Jalisco, is situated in the Atemajac Valley. As the economic center of the Bajío region, it stands as one of Mexico's most prominent urban areas, ranking among the country's most densely populated municipalities and largest metropolitan regions. The city serves as a major national hub for business, technology, arts, culture, and tourism.

Recognized as a central home to iconic Mexican cultural traditions, Guadalajara is closely associated with mariachi, tequila, and birria. The city regularly hosts major gatherings, including the Guadalajara International Book Fair and the Guadalajara International Film Festival. Its global profile has also been bolstered by hosting major international sporting events, including matches for several FIFA World Cups and the Pan American Games.

After three previous relocations following its initial settlement in 1532, the city was permanently established at its current site in 1542 and named after the Spanish birthplace of conquistador Nuño de Guzmán. Granted cityhood and a royal coat of arms by Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, Guadalajara served as the capital of the Kingdom of Nueva Galicia under Spanish colonial rule, later expanding its boundaries by incorporating neighboring villages such as Mezquitán, Analco, and Mexicaltzingo. The city featured prominently in national history, notably as the site where independence leader Miguel Hidalgo issued a decree abolishing slavery in 1810, prior to Guadalajara becoming the capital of Jalisco in 1823.

A rich array of historic and architectural landmarks is located across the city. Notable sites include the iconic Guadalajara Cathedral, the Degollado Theatre, and the Templo Expiatorio. Visitors and residents also frequent the UNESCO World Heritage site Hospicio Cabañas, as well as the San Juan de Dios Market, which is the largest indoor market in Latin America.

The late nineteenth and twentieth centuries brought significant modernization through the arrival of electrical service, rail connections, and industrial expansion. Today, Guadalajara remains an educational center, home to top-ranked institutions such as the University of Guadalajara and the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara, while modern industrial parks and global technology corporations continue to influence its regional economy.
