Why Hadera
Situated along seven kilometers of Israel's Mediterranean coastal plain, Hadera is a city in the northern Sharon region of the Haifa District. Positioned roughly 45 kilometers from both Tel Aviv and Haifa, it spans 53 square kilometers, making it one of the country's larger municipalities. The city is defined by its coastal setting, distinct residential districts, and surrounding natural preserves.
Hadera was established in 1891 as an agricultural settlement by Hovevei Zion members hailing from Lithuania and Latvia, who purchased low-lying marshlands known locally as Wadi al-Khudeira. Early residents faced severe health challenges from malaria while draining the swamps, living initially in a central structure known as the Khan. Over the twentieth century, the colony expanded into a prominent regional trade hub, gaining city status in the mid-twentieth century. Its population grew rapidly through consecutive migration waves, including notable communities from Europe, Yemen, Ethiopia, and the former Soviet Union.
The municipality encompasses several distinct neighborhoods and cultural facilities. On the coast, Giv'at Olga features the historic house of Olga Hankin as well as the Technoda, an educational science center containing a planetarium and an advanced telescope. Nearby lie the residential districts of Neve Haim, built around its historic water tower, and Nahaliel, originally founded by Yemenite settlers. Additional areas include Beit Eliezer to the east, the seaside quarter of Ein Hayam, and HaOtsar, which houses Yehoshua Park.
Extensive green spaces edge the urban area, including Hasharon Park and Nahal Hadera Park, a 1,300-dunam eucalyptus forest. Offshore, warm water discharges from the coastal Orot Rabin Power Plant—the country's largest power station—draw seasonal aggregations of sandbar and dusky sharks between November and May. Hadera is also an industrial center, home to a high-tech business park, a paper mill established in 1953, and a major desalination plant.
Travel to and around Hadera is facilitated by its position along major transportation routes. The city sits close to Highway 2 and Highway 4, two primary north-south roadways running along the coast. Rail connections are provided via Hadera West Railway Station on the coastal rail network, as well as Hadera East Railway Station along the Eastern Line.
