Perched on a hill along Kilometre 3 of Jalan Tutong in Kampong Tumasek, Istana Darul Hana (also known as Istana Lama) is one of only three remaining active palaces in Brunei. Built in 1950 and completed in 1951, this historic complex covers roughly 6 acres along the Brunei River and holds a special place in royal history. It served as the residence and office of Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III from 1951 to 1987, making it the backdrop for major national milestones.
Notably, it is the country's first palace built entirely of cement and concrete. When visiting this historic landmark, you are looking at a site that witnessed key historical moments: ancient royal traditions revived by Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III, royal weddings, state banquets, and the birth of several royal children. It was also where Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah received early private tuition in the palace surau, and where Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III abdicated the throne to his son in 1967.
The sprawling property's design encompasses notable features such as a water fountain, Show Room, Balai Indera Kenchana, Balai Singgahsana, and the Regalia House.
