If you are exploring Bandar Seri Begawan in Brunei's Brunei–Muara District, a visit to Istana Darussalam (Darussalam Palace) offers an authentic encounter with the nation's royal heritage. Located along Jalan Darussalam in Kampong Sumbiling Lama on the banks of the Kedayan River, this green and brown structure stands out in stunning contrast to the surrounding village homes. First built from wood in 1947 for approximately B$7,000 and covering 0.76 acres, it illustrates the finest indigenous Malay architecture of its era, later incorporating concrete for certain pillars and beams.

When you visit, you will see a deeply significant historical landmark: it is the former residence of Omar Ali Saifuddien III, who used the lower section as a private office in 1947, and the birthplace of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, Prince Mohamed Bolkiah, and Princess Masna. You can also view the Darussalam Jetty, the royal entry from the Kedayan River to the palace doorway, which serves as a historical space displaying the palace's history. Today, the palace is protected under the Antiquities and Treasure Trove Act of the Museums Department and maintained by the Public Works Department.

Although no longer actively used by the royal family, representatives from the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque still perform the tahlil ritual here every Friday.
