Liangzhu Museum

Located in the northwestern outskirts of Hangzhou, China, the Liangzhu Museum offers you an immersive look into the ancient Neolithic Liangzhu culture, also known as the Jade culture dating back to 3000 BC. Built directly on the site where numerous ancient treasures were unearthed, this archaeological museum showcases one of the most important early Yangtze cultures, famed for its rice agriculture, elaborate handicraft industry, and artistic achievements. As you visit, you will experience a striking modern structure designed by David Chipperfield Architects.

Set on a former industrial site transformed into a landscaped park with hills and manmade streams, the Iranian travertine stone-clad building is surrounded on three sides by a lake. You enter via a bridge that echoes the historic aquaculture and irrigation systems of the Liangzhu people. Inside its abstract geometrical design, five internal courtyards invite daylight into galleries that span three conventional exhibition rooms and a temporary exhibition space.

You can also explore an outdoor exhibition area situated on a small island connected by a rear courtyard bridge. Whether you are admiring unearthed artefacts or enjoying the serene parkland, you will find a fascinating connection between ancient history and contemporary design.
