Perched on Castle Hill above downtown Ljubljana, Ljubljana Castle is the capital's defining medieval landmark. The site has been continuously settled since 1200 BC, evolving from a Roman army stronghold and an 11th-century wooden and stone fortress into a sprawling castle complex. Most of its existing architecture dates to the 16th and 17th centuries, when it served as a defense against Ottoman invasions and peasant revolts.
Over the centuries, the complex transformed from a medieval fortress and the seat of the lords of Carniola into an 18th-century arsenal, military hospital, 19th-century prison, and local housing, before extensive modern renovations turned it into a major cultural venue. When you visit today, you can explore a wide mix of historic structures framing the central courtyard. You will see the Archers' Tower adorned with mid-20th-century sgraffito artwork depicting traditional Slovenian folk ballads and mythology, the 15th-century St.
George's Chapel, and the panoramic tower housing a virtual museum. You can walk through the former noble prison at the Tower of Erasmus, view the permanent Slovenian history exhibition inside the former gunpowder store, and inspect a special vine descended from Maribor's 400-year-old oldest cultivated vine in the world.
