Standing proudly in Town Square directly in front of the Ljubljana Town Hall, the Robba Fountain—also called the Fountain of the Three Carniolan Rivers—is one of Slovenia's most recognizable symbols. Originally crafted in 1751 by Italian sculptor Francesco Robba, this magnificent monument was commissioned to represent municipal authority, showcase the city's primacy in the Duchy of Carniola, and supply fresh drinking water. Inspired by famous Roman fountains, Robba cleverly designed a slim, triangular structure to welcome visitors approaching Town Square from three different directions.
As you admire the site today, you will see a replica installed in 2006, featuring a trefoil-shaped basin over steps that represent the Carniolan mountains. Resting at the foot of a 10-meter obelisk are three muscular male figures carved from Carrara marble, each holding a water jug and accompanied by a dolphin. These figures symbolize the river gods of the Sava, Krka, and Ljubljanica, as well as the historical regions of Upper, Lower, and Inner Carniola.
