Why Maple Ridge
Maple Ridge is a city located in southwestern British Columbia, Canada, situated within the northeastern section of Greater Vancouver. Positioned between the Fraser River to the south and the Golden Ears mountain peaks—part of the Garibaldi Ranges in the Coast Mountains—the municipality features a landscape defined by its natural setting and an oceanic climate. The main commercial and downtown core of the city is known as Haney.
First incorporated as a district municipality in 1874, Maple Ridge stands as one of British Columbia's oldest municipal entities, officially attaining city status in 2014. The community is made up of several distinct historical areas, including Albion, Port Hammond, Ruskin, Silver Valley, Webster's Corners, and Whonnock. Near the riverbank lies Port Haney, a preserved heritage district that features historic buildings relocated and maintained from the era when the area served as a steamboat landing and railway station.
Cultural facilities in Maple Ridge center on the Arts Centre and Theatre, known as the ACT, which features a main stage auditorium, a studio theatre, educational spaces, and the Maple Ridge Art Gallery dedicated to displaying works by local artists. Public activity often focuses on Memorial Peace Park in the downtown center, which includes a community bandstand and a Cenotaph that serves as the location for annual Remembrance Day commemorations.
Visitors and residents gather for a variety of public events hosted across the city throughout the year. Memorial Peace Park accommodates seasonal celebrations such as Earth Day, Canada Day, Aboriginal Day, Halloween fireworks, and music gatherings, as well as the weekly Haney Farmers Market running on Saturdays from May through October. Other major community events take place at the Albion Fairgrounds, which host the annual Caribbean Festival and Country Fest, one of the province's historic agricultural fairs.
Travel to and around Maple Ridge is facilitated by regional transit and road networks. Public transportation is operated by TransLink, featuring local bus lines anchored at the Haney Place Exchange and rail connections via the West Coast Express at Port Haney station. Highway 7 and the northern Dewdney Trunk Road provide vehicular access to neighboring Pitt Meadows and Mission, while the Golden Ears Bridge crosses the Fraser River to connect with Langley. Air transit for the immediate region is supported by the nearby Pitt Meadows Regional Airport.
